The "Alamo," the big black cube by Bernard "Tony" Rosenthal, was installed in 1968 and was only intended for a six month stay, but was left in place when Cooper Union students protested its removal. According to this New York Times article, the sculpture was stuck, and I can only hope that it's been removed to repair it. The cynic in me thinks that it's been removed because it clashed with the Sculpture for Living that's been rising up just south of it. Only time will tell.
